Description

Located in the Gorbals area of Glasgow, the O2 Academy Glasgow welcomes touring bands international bands, particularly in the indie and rock genre and also strives to showcase homegrown talent. The O2 Academy Glasgow has welcomed the likes of the Killers, James Brown, the Sugababes, Bryan Ferry, the White stripes, The Prodigy, Motorhead, Clean Bndit, Laura Marling, Sam Smith, Chic, Foals, Stereophonics and Snoop Dogg. One of the most record-breaking concerts was the Killers, which sold out in three minutes. During the Glasgow International Comedy Festival, the O2 Academy Glasgow becomes a comedy club and has welcomed world-class comedians such as Frankie Boyle, Russell Brand and Jimmy Carr. 

 

Boasting a beautiful Grade B listed building with an exquisite art deco design, the building for the Glasgow O2 Academy has retained many of its original features, including the boxes, balcony and archways. Owned by the Academy Music Group, the Glasgow O2 Academy is now sponsored by the network operator O2, as many other venues are across the UK.

The O2 Academy Glasgow Capacity and Seating

The O2 Academy Glasgow has a capacity of 2,550 and you can enjoy the shows from the large standing area, the balcony and the upper area where there is seating available, which is unreserved on the balcony. Seating might be a better option if you have young children or if you are a customer with limited mobility.

Getting There

The O2 Academy Glasgow is located in the Gorbals area of Glasgow and is easily accessible by public transport and car.  

Bus: the Buchanan bus stop is just under 2,000 metres away and there are several buses which stop here, including lines 3,4, 2 and 57. There are also night buses N38, N57 which stop near the station.  

 

Train: Glasgow Central station, which has many trains to different locations in Scotland and across the UK, is only a 10 minute walk away from the station. If you are travelling to Glasgow Queen Station, then this is only a 15 minute walk away.  

Car: it is easy to reach the O2 Academy Glasgow is accessible by most major roads, including the M8. You can also park in the road in the surrounding area, but there is a voucher system operated by the council. There is also a 159 car park at Bridge street subway station.

Facilities and Age Restrictions

There are six bars in the Glasgow O2 Academy, including a large island band when you enter, and two on the side. 

 

Age Restrictions 

Age restrictions differ greatly depending on the event but there are a few general rules: 


No under 8s, but contact the venue if you are unsure 

8-13 years must be accompanied by an adult.

The O2 Academy Glasgow provides one  companion ticket per customer, which is completely free of charge, so that they can support you throughout your visit. However, it is necessary that you prove your eligibility.  

 

The O2 Academy Glasgow accepts the Access Card, so that you don’t have to input any information again. You can find the O2 Academy Glasgow’s online booking forms to apply for the access card on the website.  

  

Wheelchair Spaces 

 

There are several wheelchair spaces available, but they are booked on a first come and first served basis, so it is worth booking far in advance. Viewing areas are available for access customers and their companions, but please be aware that this area is not open to your friends as well. 

 

Assistance and Guide Dogs  

 

Guide dogs and Assistance dogs are welcome to join you in the O2 Academy Glasgow, we can arrange a quiet, safe place for your assistance dogs to be looked after for the duration of the performance.

History

Before becoming the Glasgow O2 Academy in March 2003, the venue was the New Bedford cinema, but underwent a 3M refurbishment to become the venue that it is today. On the  opening night on the 26th March 2003, the Sugababes, Deacon Blue and Singer Byran all performed in an unforgettable performance. On the 6th November 2006, the O2, a part of Telefonica Europe, became the new sponsor for the academy venues, in a deal with Livenation and the music venue was renamed the O2 Academy Glasgow.
