Description

Making an explosive debut when it appeared at Chicago’s Steppenwolf in 2017, Antoinette Nwandu’s groundbreaking and allegorical play Pass Over is crossing the Atlantic to the West End. Inspired by Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot and Exodus, Nwandu intertwines poetry, humour and humanity in her original and political new play which explores race and relations in America.

In a bleak, urban landscape surrounded by sand, two African American men, Moses and Kitch, are passing the time exchanging banter and wordplay such as making fake calls to order room service, in true Waiting for Godot style. The two men are also constantly in fear of the dangers in their environment, especially the police, who they call the “po-pos”. Whilst they are waiting for change, Moses dreams of taking them to the promised land, the ‘Pass ovah!’...

Considered a masterpiece of modern drama, Pass Over triggered both controversy and an extremely positive reception when it first premiered and was included on the 2016 Kilroy’s list. After seeing the play and understanding its power, Spike Lee filmed a performance which is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
