Description

Located in the bustling, student populated city of Newcastle Upon Tyne, the O2 Academy Newcastle is part of the Academy Music Group Family and regularly welcomes major bands and also showcases homegrown talent. The O2 Academy Newcastle has welcomed the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Adele, Katy Perry, the Libertines, Sam Smith McFly, Blondie and Amy Winehouse, The Who, Happy Mondays, Blondie, Stereophonics, Elbow, The Moody Blues, The Beatles, the Yardbird, the Futureheads, Blur, Adele and New Order. It is also home to regular club nights, such as Dirty Pop, Ikon Live and Alpha which can be enjoyed by both students and locals alike.

Originally a beautiful ballroom, the O2 Academy Newcastle has retained many of its incredible features including high ceilings, stairways and a balcony which makes it an incredible venue. Known for its intimate and vibrant atmosphere, the O2 Academy Newcastle is one of the most prominent venues in the North East.

Bus: if you are planning on taking the bus, there are several main bus lines which go directly to the O2 Academy Newcastle. Elton Square bus station is only 250 metres away, as is Haymarket bus station. There are also Night bus services available.

Train: the nearest train station to the O2 Academy Newcastle is about a 7 minute walk away.

Car: it is easy to reach the O2 Academy Newcastle using most major approach roads. With regards to the O2 Academy Newcastle parking, there is a 24 hour multi-storey car park which is located in Grainger Town.

There are not any car parks at the venue itself, but there are reserved bays around the venue such as two blue badge bays which are situated on Fenkle Street, where there is a car park.

The O2 Academy Newcastle has one concessionary companion ticket available per customer, so that you can be assisted throughout your visit. However, you must prove your eligibility for this ticket.

History

Opening its doors on the 14th October 2005, the venue was originally called the Carling Academy until the Academy Music Group changed its sponsorship and it was rebranded the O2 Academy Newcastle in 2008. Prior to this, the venue was a Picture House when it first opened in 1927 and then from 1959 it was a Gala Bingo Hall. The Academy Music Group took an interest in the site in 2004 and since then, it has been hosting world class live entertainment and a range of legendary shows from different artists.

There are several bars in the O2 Academy Newcastle, as well as a cloakroom. However, please bear in mind that space in the cloakroom is limited, so try not to bring too many things.

The age restrictions for the venue completely depend on the event, yet there are a few rules which apply to all gigs:

8-13 years are allowed to come with an adult (18+)

Some shows are 14+, but if you’re under the age of 16, you still need to come with an adult
