History

The Electric Ballroom was originally an Irish ballroom which was popular during the 1930s and was officially opened in 1938 by owner Bill Fuller, who passed away in 2008, when he was aged 91. In World War II, Camden Town Tube station was bombed and Bill bought more of the site, expanding the venue so that it was much bigger. It was a very popular venue for Irish immigrants and for live music throughout the 1940s and 1950s. During the 1970s, the venue welcomed some of the biggest names in rock music, and was forced to close in 1978 for about 9 months because of noise complaints.

There were many club nights which played there during the 1990s and a myriad of famous bands and artists. The venue was threatened with closure in 2003,when Camden Town Tube Station proposed building another development in the place of the Electric Ballroom. However, famous artists, such as Bob Geldof, fought for the venue and it still stands proudly in Camden Town today.
