History

Opening its doors in 1966, the site of the O2 Academy Bristol was formerly a part of Mecca Leisure Group’s New Entertainments Centre and also an ABC Cinema. When it opened in 1966, it included licensed bars, an ice rink, bowling lanes, a casino, a night club and a cinema. However, this was mostly demolished in 1998 and the site became student accommodation. It was a cinema until 1996 and then a nightclub in 2000, called the “Rock”. In 2001, the site was bought by the Academy Music Group who named it the Carling Academy, the current sponsor at the time.
