With music by Claude-Michel Schönberg and the original French script by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel adapted into English by Herbert Kretzmer, based on the Victor Hugo novel, Les Misérables, besides being the musical phenomenon of our times, has beaten all possible records in the UK and worldwide. Performed for the first time in 1980, in the Palais des Sports, Paris, and, five years later, in the West End of London, this musical has won eight Tony Awards and three Olivier Awards, and has been performed in more than 40 countries across the five continents.
An unmissable musical for lovers of the genre, Les Misérables is the source of such classics as “Do You Hear the People Sing?”, “Look Down”, “One Day More”, “I Dreamed a Dream” and “Castle on a Cloud”. Popularly known as Les Mis., the London production is the only one in the world working with the same creative team as when it was originally performed. After several moves, this musical has been settled at Queen’s Theatre, London, since 2004.
Based on the popular novel by Victor Hugo, the musical Les Misérables tells the story of Jean Valjean, an ex-convict who dreams of liberation in 19th-century France. After spending 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread for his family, he’s conditionally released. Permanently scarred by his past, Valjean, now marginalised in society, can’t find a job to earn a living and so he returns to crime.
But the appearance of a kind-hearted bishop encourages him to reflect on the meaning of life and makes him start a new life, where he tries to do good and help everyone who needs it. This new identity is threatened by inspector Javert, a man who’s dedicated his entire life to obeying the law and who’ll never forget his prisoner number 24601.
